2012 Harvest Dinner photos

On Saturday, October 27, 2012 the FTHS hosted its annual Harvest Dinner at New Bethel Baptist Church.  A brief pre-dinner meeting introduced some of the Society’s board members, covered our annual treasurer’s report and reviewed things the Society had accomplished this year. Attendees dined on roast pork, slaw, broccoli, seasoned rice, homemade bread and cake, catered by Jim and Sue Winton.  Drawings for door prizes were held, with gift baskets presented to several winners.

The speaker was Civil War reenactor Harvey W. Warrner, who gave an interesting and informative talk about the Civil War from the perspective of an Indiana foot soldier. He shared the military origin of colloquial terms like “shoddy,” “roll out of bed” and “pup tent;” showed the items that a foot soldier carried with him on a march; and described the conditions under which they traveled and camped. Mr. Warrner also displayed a number of Civil War artifacts, including around a soldier’s New Testament dated 1856, some 150-year-old hardtack, and a 125-pound cannonball. He also demonstrated types of guns, hats, ammunition, and a bedroll. He shared newspapers from the era, including one from Indianapolis. After his presentation he answered questions from the audience.

Below are some photos from the event, including several of Mr. Warrner’s artifacts.
